George Russell is undoubtedly one of the top drivers on this seasons Formula One grid. However, following his most recent win in Singapore, fans have noticed that as he steps on the top step of the podium, attention is often shifted away from his win. Whether it be an unfortunate coincidence for Russell, or a trend that could cost him the starlight he has earned, bigger stories and events have always left the Mercedes driver in the shadows as he takes home the gold.
His first win came at São Paulo in 2022, which also saw Mercedes’ first win of the season. Starting on pole after sprint qualifying, Russell held onto his lead and claimed first place. Whilst this was a huge moment in his career, a dramatic, crash-filled race ensued behind him, ultimately shifting attention from his win. Following a large collision between Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, a safety car was called on the first lap. Once cleared and racing resumed, it wasn’t long before more drama broke out. Hamilton and Verstappen swiftly came together, causing damage to the Dutchman’s RedBull. The former rivals made contact at turn two, leaving fans reminiscing the brutality of the previous season. Another pair of drivers also provoked a large crash, as McLaren’s Lando Norris shunted Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc into the barrier at turn 9. Fortunately for the Monegasque, Leclerc was able to continue his race, finishing 4th. Yet, it wasn’t just on-track collisions that steered attention away from Russell’s maiden win. An agitated Verstappen was told by his team to allow fellow RedBull driver Sergio Perez through. However, the Dutchman consistently refused these orders, stating he had his “reasons”, that the team knew of. This internal tension within the team sparked controversy and split opinions between fans. This once again left George Russell’s maiden win in the dust.

George Russell’s second win came two years later at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, at the home of RedBull. Despite his unexpected victory, after a late stint of drama, attention once again turned away from the British driver’s first place. With Verstappen leading Norris on lap 64/71, the gap between the two title-fighters was closing with every passing moment. This tension accumulated over time and came to a peak when the two made contact. Norris, who went around the outside, was pushed by Verstappen, who slightly veered left, where both drivers colided with the sides of their cars. Consequently, both drivers suffered punctures to their tyres and had to come into the pit lane. Verstappen, regardless of his penalty, was able to continue the race, opposed to Norris who was forced to retire due to the damage his car sustained. It was during this crucial pitting period that George Russell swooped by to claim the lead off the Dutchman. Yet, due to the high tensions between Verstappen and Norris, this incredible comeback and win was ultimately distracted away from Russell.
The third race that Russell won was in Belgium, 2024. However, this was the victory that never stayed. An incredible 1-2 for the Silver Arrows seemed to be certain for the team, as Russell crossed the line with Hamilton close behind. Taking the top step of the podium, everything appeared to be perfectly in order for the team from Brockley. Ultimately, this was not the case. Behind the scenes, FIA officials were conducting the usual post-race scruitineering. It was found that Russell’s Mercedes was underneath the acceptable and required weight. Unfortunately for the Brit, the FIA disqualified him from the race, leaving Hamilton to take the first-place trophy from his teammate. From hoorays to heatbreak, George Russell’s talent and incredible race win, was once again left in the dark.

Las Vegas 2024 saw the man from King’s Lynn’s third official race win. However, the starlight never seemed to stay with Russell. Despite converting pole position to a win, headlines spoke of how Max Verstappen secured his 4th Driver’s World Championship, ending his season-long fight with Lando Norris. Verstappen’s title win now put him equal with some of the greats: Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel. This led to George’s third win being once again put in the shadows.
Similarly, his latest win at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix was also underemphasised due to McLaren securing the Constructors World Championship. Even on the podium, the McLaren team celebrated their victory tremendously. However, some controversy surrounding Oscar Piastri, who didn’t finish on the podium and was in the media pen for the celebration, caused rumours and speculation about the Austrialian’s place within the team, taking the attention away from the Mercedes driver’s win.

George Russell is certainly one of today’s upcoming superstars. But he is consistently overshadowed and underestimated by teams, fans and commentators. Will Russell be able to make his own breakthrough and steal back the spotlight? Or will he fade into the shadows of those around him?
